Q&A

Merchant:

A merchant reached out to us wanting to know which app was easiest to use, Weight Embedded Barcode Parser or Variable Price Barcode Parser app better?

CSI Works Support:

The difference between Variable Price Barcode Parser vs Weight Embedded Barcode Parser is technical ;

One is not better than the other in any way. Its just that some scale print weight embedded barcodes and some scale prints price embedded barcodes. Depending on which one your scale is configured to that would drive the decision on which app you need to use.

A perspective merchant reached out wanting to know how Clover and the Variable Price Barcode Parser app would behave when using their price embedded barcodes and regular price codes.

Below are a variety of barcodes the merchant sent. Some are fixed price and others are variable by weight.

The merchant also also wanted a demonstration of an item that has to be weighed at the register?

Q&A

Agent:

An agent reached out wanting to know where the Variable Price Barcode Parser pulls the price per pound (lb.) (is it being pulled from the barcode or from Clover). He said that meat prices change all the time. The agent explained

“If it’s pulling the pricing from the barcode only, can we just set the price per lb. to it in Clover, so there’s never confusion?  This way the merchant would only have to update the price per lb. on the scale and disregard updating Clover.”

CSI Works Support:

Our support team was able to confirm that the merchant can use Variable Price Barcode Parser app to set the price per lb. on Clover.

To do this, our support team explained to do the following:

“In Clover setup an item as Variable and this way you will never have to adjust pricing on Clover and it will always be picked up from barcode.”

Q&A

Agent:

An agent contacted us because he has a merchant who runs a meat house. The merchant needs to know if his meat CAS scales would need to be hooked up to ethernet for them to work with Clover.

CSI Works Support:

Our support team let the agent know that there is no connection between the scale or Clover.

What makes Clover and the scale work is the Barcode that is printed on the label from the scale. The merchant would need to install Variable Price Barcode Parser app to enable Clover to understand the price embedded barcodes that are being printed from the scale.

Here is an example video:

Q&A

Merchant:

We had a merchant contact us needing help with their barcodes switching prices. The merchant was able to print a barcode for orders over $100. However, Clover register only read it as less than $100. Therefore, a ticket that was $150 with a barcode was being read as $50 in the register.

CSI Works Support:

The solution to this problem is to update the scale to print the barcode over $100.00 Then, on Clover go to Variable Price barcode parser app and click on settings icon on the top corner and choose up to $999.99 barcode type. This should resolve this issue.

We had an agent contact us because their merchant was interested in implementing Variable Price Barcode Parser. Before installing the app, they wanted to know where the app is pulling the price per lb. – from the barcode, or from Clover?

Meat prices change all the time.  Therefore, they wanted to know if the app is pulling the pricing from the barcode only, can the price per lb. be set to 0 in Clover, so there’s never confusion. The agent explained that this way the merchant only would have to update the price per lb. on the scale and disregard updating Clover.

Q&A

Merchant:

A merchant contact us because they were testing the Variable Price Barcode Parser app.
The merchant was getting different results when placing an item as variable versus per unit. The variable settings amounts were matching the barcode. However, when placed as fixed the amounts were off by one penny.

CSI Works Support:

The reason the merchant was having this experience was because the Variable Price Barcode Parser app does not work when an item is set to Fixed.

Now the correct way to parse the price embedded barcode is Variable.

The rounding error the merchant was experiencing had to do the several calculations.

The scale calculates total price by multiplying total weight by per unit programmed in scale. Then, on Clover, when set up per unit it does backward calculation, and this creates 3 calculations of the number back and forth. Sometime rounding becomes off by a penny.

The quick solution is to use Variable price setting.

If, the merchant wants to use per unit option on their scale, they would need to change the barcode to print total weight instead of total price. Then, on Clover they would use Weight Embedded Barcode Parser and uninstall Variable Price Barcode Parser.

“Attached is a file with two copies of scale receipts.  They use a Digi SM-5000 scale.

Can you advise a setup that will eliminate the rounding issue?

The merchant is using the Variable Price Barcode Parser app.”

CSI Works Support:

There are two ways to solve this issue

  1. Quick way.

Switch the item to Variable instead of Per Unit in Clover Inventory app this will resolve the wrong rounding issue.

  1. Longer Way.

If your merchant wants to see the weight on transaction and wants to keep using Per Unit then they would need to switch their scale settings to print weight embedded barcode instead of price embedded and on Clover, they would remove Variable Price Barcode Parser and install Weight Embedded Barcode Parser.

An agent wanted to know if there is an app, similar to Variable Price Barcode Parser, that works with Clover without an integrated weight scale, where the merchant can create an item with variable pricing in Clover. Therefore, the app will determine the price based on what the merchant enters as weight. No attached scales – the customer will use their own scale.

CSI Works Support:

Yes, you can easily do this without any apps. Just setup item in Clover inventory as Per Unit and make sure to use LB for item unit.

When this item gets selected in register, you’ll be prompted to enter total weight.

If you setup item in inventory as variable instead of per unit then you will be prompted to enter total price.

They have their weight embedded in their barcode and have the items and price per unit. So when they add stock inventory it considers it to be the total pounds instead of the number of packages.

CSI Works Support:

No, to have the ability to read weight embedded barcodes item must remain as Per Unit

The inventory tracking will track whatever number you put in qty but item unit is the field where you specify what it is LB or KG.

Weight Embedded Barcode Parser only works with items that are setup per unit

Q&A

Agent:

We had an agent contact us wanting clarification on how to properly set up Clover for a merchant. The merchant needed to set up its scales as variable. He provided the following scenario:

“Let’s say I keep it at a per unit price. However, I have it set up on Clover to $6.99/lb.  The price increases to $7.99 lb, the scale is updated with this price.  I sell 1 lb of an item and scan it.  Does Clover pull $6.99 (from the per unit price in inventory) or $7.99 (per unit from the barcode/scale)?

Reason I ask, some of these items are bagged and have a sticker but the sticker / barcode isn’t always perfect.  So as not to have to stop the checkout for a price check, this merchant would like to retain the “default” pricing in Clover in case they have to manually process it.”

CSI Works Support:

The answer to this agent’s question is:

“No, if you setup an item as Per unit on Clover you are indicating the price per unit in clover as well.

When the price of an item changes merchant would have to update price on Clover and on Scale.

This is one of the reasons why merchants choose to setup an item as Variable and use Variable Price Barcode Parser instead because of this very issue.”

Here are our challenges:

We want all our products to move to weight only on the bar code since pricing in agriculture is going up.

Can we setup your app to recognize the old and new label and parse them correctly?

Our existing products have the last four digits, before the final check digit reserved for the price.

New products will have the last four digits reserved for the weight.

We have a merchant that will be using your application. However, the LS-100 that we were trying to scan the barcodes for. After the setup, it was doing the opposite as described on the app market.

In other words, the scanned item, Instead of pricing up and pushing the custom info, it wanted to add it into the clover inventory, and we would need to name it and hit save.

The merchant was thinking if this is how the application works. Then they would see no reason to use it.

This is why I need your help.

I captured two pictures to see if it can help.

The barcode info shows 2 00000 31398 2.

I was thinking were the 0’s is should it have been 6 digits?

And if you ask accessibility was enabled for the Weight embedded barcode parser, as described on the tutorial setup on your app market.

CSI Works Support:

I have a question In the attached picture where you show barcode I see that you have installed app called Variable Price Barcode Parser.

That is in fact the app you need.

However in email before you reference Weight Embedded Barcode Parser as one for which you’ve enabled the accessibility settings.

If you are using the app Weight Embedded Barcode Parser please uninstall it. Based on label I see you need Variable Price Barcode Paser.

Now assuming that you have Variable Price Barcode Parser installed and that accessibility settings are turned on.

You need to first open inventory app and add this new item to your inventory when you do add it to inventory do so as Variable Price item and not as fixed priced.

Then in product code field enter 200000

Save this item in inventory then you can go to register and scan this barcode and the price will be picked up as you expect.

Agent:

I wanted to reach out to you and say thank you. It appears that we won the battle of the barcodes but not the war.

The Clover App parser was also providing some miss match reading. I wanted to confirm if the merchant scale was not properly set up. Since on the miss match reading It was accurate.

200101 50154 7 Price showed up as $501.54

200167 00176 0 Price showed correct $1.76

CSI Works Support:

Yes, I see the image and notes of how the price is read. To fix this issue follow these instructions:

  1. Open Variable Price Barcode Parser.
  2. Navigate to Settings on the Top Corner.
  3. Barcode Format
  4. Choose the barcode format that is represented for $99.99
  5. Save

This will adjust the way our app reads the barcode, and you won’t have to adjust the barcode on the scale.

Agent:

You’re instructions worked great. In addition, I added the descriptor and the first 6-digit barcode.

And all the custom cuts for the listing worked and the merchant was happy.

If you could provide a full listing of compatible weight scale models. This would be great to know this gives hope to merchants. With already purchase weight scales a chance to update their POS.

Agent:

The merchant is looking for a scale that would integrate with Clover, print labels with a bar code, ingredients list, price and possibly his logo. It needs to be easy to program with the ability to use the Clove to input the info.

He uses an older CAS scale with printer and he has to program it which he hates cause it takes so long.

Can you help, will you support the scale and what would you recommend and price?

CSI Works Support:

Yes, we support everything we sell.

What is the scale he has now? Is it CAS LP1000?

Agent:

CAS label printer. Do these types work through Clover?

CSI Works Support:

Yes, this is an OLD CAS LP1000 model aka (ABC)

It does not connect to computer and only way to program things is via the scale itself.

The New CAS LP1000N model has an ability to connect to computer with USB cable.

Via computer merchant can interface with the scale in a much more efficient and faster way.

The computer must be windows based with USB connections.

In all other respects the scale will look and function similarly to the one they have now.

Agent:

Does it tie into the Clover at all? Or just a window computer? Is this the best choice for his needs? Pricing wise and support, how does that work? I think we were both thinking that in some way it worked thru the clover POS.

So the PLU part goes away when using a windows based computer.

Does it matter which clover device and which SaaS device is chosen, even though there really isn’t an integration per se.

What would the next steps be for the merchant? He has two clover mini’s right now that are customer facing for payments only.

CSI Works Support:

The only scale that can connect to Clover in any way is CAS SW-RS the 20 lb capacity without label printing capabilities.

All other scale technically never connects to clover

We make label printing scale work with clover via the barcode the scale prints. This is where our Variable Price barcode parser app comes into play.

Before it all works merchant will be expected to setup items in Clover and in Scale

The item codes will match in both system and that’s what makes it work

There are shortcuts. For instance, if items are setup on Clover like Variable price items

Then merchant is only expected to update pricing for items in their scale. If they have items setup as per unit then the merchant will have to duplicate the setup of items on both systems.

The only way to interface with CAS scale is either via the scale itself or with USB connected windows-based computer.

  • All Clover devices are fine.
  • Must have barcode scanner which is sold by clover (Cannot buy anywhere else) They have 2 options both will work.
  • They will need Register plan which gives them access to “Per Unit” or “Variable” price type in inventory.
  • Clover would have to be not just their payment terminal but it has to be their register as well.

Next steps:

  • Buy label printing scale if bought from us then it can be purchased here: www.casforclover.com or www.torreyforclover.com
  • Buy Barcode scanner from clover.
  • Once scale is received setup Inventory items in scale.
  • Setup inventory items in Clover
  • Dump other POS begin using Clover as register and payment terminal (they can use clover equipment they have now or upgrade to station )

Think that’s it in a nutshell.

CSI Works Support:

Yes, all still applies.

Now have updated link www.scale4clover.com

Carries all brands.

Agent:

Since they have a CAS now and are used to it, does it make sense to stay with that brand or other suggestions?

Clover integrated any farther along or will programming still require a windows computer and usb connection?

CSI Works Support:

With CAS they will always need Windows computer and USB connection. (Although some higher end models by cas offer wifi connection to computer)

With Detecto or USA Measurements there’s an option to do the programming on a computer and instead of connecting scale to computer the data is transferred to scale via USB Thumb Drive.  (First you download the data file to thumb drive from computer, then you plug the drive to scale and transfer the file with all the settings and data in it. )

There is no connection between the scale and Clover ever.

The Barcode Parser apps enable clover to read price or weight embedded barcodes.

What is the Work Around Having to Change Prices Anytime Price Changes for an Item?

Type: Support Call

Call Reported On: 2021-10-01

Products Discussed: Variable Price Barcode Parser

Q&A

Merchant:

We are using your variable price app in our retail grocery POS.(Clover)  When we change a price on our meat scale, do we also have to change the price for that item in inventory of the Clover system?

For example, delmonico steaks were $32.99/lb on our scales.  We changed them to $29.99.  But, when the Clover system scans the barcode, it’s changing the weight of the steaks, and showing the old price of $32.99/lb.  But the total retail price is still correct.  So it’s “auto correcting”.  If the total retail is $140.00, it’s adjusting the weight at the old price to end up with the total price.

Is there a work around where we don’t have to adjust the price within Clover…or we need to?

CSI Works Support:

Switch the item price type in Clover to Variable instead of Per Unit. This way you’ll never have to adjust pricing in Clover.

This is the only work around without having to change prices everywhere any time price changes for an item.

How to Troubleshoot Variable Price Barcode Parser Rounding Error

How to Troubleshoot Variable Price Barcode Parser Rounding Error

Type: Support Call

Call Reported On: 2021-09-16

Products Discussed: Weight Embedded Barcode, Variable Price Barcode Parser

Q&A

Agent:

We have an issue with a Clover system using the Variable Price Barcode Parser app with a Kitchen Scale. The issue is that the scale weighs and calculates the final price for the product, yet when the barcode is scanned on the Clover, for some reason one cent is subtracted from the total price.  It only happens occasionally with random items, so we suspect it might have something to do with a Rounding Error/Issue.

CSI Works Support:

Yes, I am very well familiar with the issue. You are correct it is in fact rounding issue because of double rounding once by scale once by our app on clover.

Scale figures out total price by calculating weight to unit price. We take total price and calculate down to figure out total weight. Sometimes the number is off by a cent either direction very rarely or even in one merchant not on all items.

There are 2 ways of solving this

  1. Switch your item price type from “Per Unit” to “Variable” This is the quickest way to solve the issue. The reason why this works is because we will stop reverse calculation to a number that scale started from and simply will pass total price into variable priced item.

OR

  1. Change your scale to encode weight instead of price into barcode. And on clover end switch from Variable price barcode parser to Weight embedded barcode parser. That way scale will stop doing an extra calculation because it will send total weight and our Weight Embedded Barcode parser will pick up total weight and calculate total price which will always match what scale calculated because we are both using same base number “total weight”

This solution is more involved and requires settings change on scale and app swap on clover. The inventory part will remain intact you will just need to switch apps after scale has been reconfigured to encode different barcode (weight instead of price).

Agent:

Thank you very much for the insight, we discussed both alternatives with the merchant and I believe we are going to change the Clover prices to Variable.

Will this cause any changes in the reporting for Clover? I think the Items report will no longer report per unit sold, correct?

Agent: Great work on your Clover apps!

I have a new grocery store client who is looking to purchase 3 scales to integrate to Clover. Looks like you have a couple apps, one that works with many scales, and the other that works with CAS.

I was going to point them towards using this one from your site, unless you have other suggestions?

It also states you provide support. Do you offer setup/training calls to familiarize themselves with your system + app?

Even though the CL5000 scale is discontinued, will it still work with your app if a merchant has one?

CSI Works Support: With the use of Variable Price Barcode Parser merchants can use any label printing scale.

We certainly sell it and the link you mentioned www.cas4clover.com is our site.

If your merchant purchases their scale from us then the training, support and assistance with scale is included as well as assistance with setup on clover via Variable price barcode parser. We provide assistance via phone, zoom call, combination of videos we make based on situation with merchants.

In any case we assist 100% to get setup and address merchants questions in the process.

What is Variable Price Barcode Parser and How does it Work?

What is Variable Price Barcode Parser and How does it Work?

Call Type: Pre-sale Support

Call Reported On: 01/02/18

Products supported: Variable Price Barcode Parser

Solution Proposition:

Our Variable Price Barcode Parser app allows Clover to understand price embedded barcodes based on the EAN-13 or UPC-12 standard: these barcodes usually come out of label-printing scales, such as those produced by CAS and Tor-rey.

This app will have no effect on 12-digit product codes that can be found on cereal boxes and other factory-packaged goods.

Gift cards, credit cards, and membership cards won’t be affected since the barcode doesn’t change when used, and therefore a much more complicated system needs to be used to process these transactions.

To allow the Variable Price Barcode Parser to function, you need to enter into the inventory app and add the product name and its 6-digit product code that appears within the first half of the barcode.

6-digit product code: this is the same number that you enter into your scale when setting up a new item within the inventory. For example, if your product code is 42, the scale will fill in the rest of the digits with other stuff, making the product code 050425. If a merchant already has product codes set up with shorter numbers, you can likely make a spreadsheet that will convert the shorter numbers to 6-digit codes based off of the format of the barcode that you print.

How do I Keep Track of my Inventory if I Sell by weight?

Call Type: Pre-sale Support

Call Reported On: 01/02/19

Products supported: Variable Price Barcode Parser

Use Case:

Clover Sales Agent: My customer wants a label-printing scale.

CSI Works Support Agent: We do have a barcode-printing scale.

Merchant: We want a scale that produces a barcode that integrates with a POS system and helps keep track of our inventory. We already use an inventory system for the wholesale side of our business. We need the inventory to tell me how many pounds of meat we’ve sold by the end of the day, every day.

Solution Proposition:

CSI Works Support Agent: You’ll switch your POS to Clover?
We developed an app that sits on top of Clover in their app market. Our app allows the use of any label-printing scale with Clover that produces a barcode. We also sell CAS label-printing scales and Tor-rey label-printing scales, as well as a CAS scale that connects directly to a clover device.

Merchant: We already have a CAS barcode-printing scale.

CSI Works Support Agent: You can use this scale with Clover, without a physical connection. The scale will print labels and our Clover app will process the inventory during the transaction with the customer. Both devices can be in any two locations in the store.
The printed price-embedded barcode will have two pieces of information: the item identification code and the total price. Our clover app, Variable Price Barcode Parser, will understand this information and help do the transaction and inventory update easily.

CSI Works Support Agent: Clover itself has pretty basic inventory tracking so without additional apps, you can specify a certain amount of poundage of a product in the inventory and then with every transaction, Clover itself will deplete the inventory automatically with every purchase (except refunds).

Merchant: Our current POS, Shoppify, isn’t working because it doesn’t seem to integrate with our scales.

CSI Works Support Agent: No, Shoppify doesn’t integrate with scales. That’s the number two reason I see people switch to Clover. The only thing you would have to manually do in Clover is manually enter when you receive sellable material from your supplier, you have to do some addition and enter the new total poundage into your inventory.

Merchant: How about online orders? We take orders through Shopify.

CSI Works Support Agent: There’s no easy way, but the most common solution on Clover is to accept payment online and when they come to the store, give the person the merchandise and add a custom tender type; call it “Shopify Order” or “Uber Eats Order”, etc. Instead of taking the money from the customer again, change the tender type to count the order in the reports/inventory but allow the person to pay online and just get the merchandise.

Does my Barcode Scanner Have to be Purchased From Clover?

Does my Barcode Scanner Have to be Purchased From Clover?

Call Type: Support Call

Products Discussed: Barcode Scanner

Problem Statement:

Merchant: Here is the scenario I am working with:

  • We use a Clover station 2018.

  • I have the item set up according to the instructions. I set up a few different items in the system.

  • I tried to utilize an external scanner (usb) and it would not work.

The external scanner seems to be stripping the leading character away, but when I scan the item in notepad and/or in Clover, the leading digit is there.

  • When I used the internal camera, the program worked just fine.

Solution:

CSI Works support: Is it possible that your external scanner is not purchased from Clover?

Merchant: I-is it that specific??

CSI Works Support: It has to be that specific. The built-in camera with a software scanner in the clover device can scan weight-embedded barcodes just fine, but a usb scanner not from clover works less like a linear camera and more like a keyboard, just outputting a string of numbers when it scans. Make sure to use a Clover barcode scanner for weight-embedded barcodes because other barcode scanners will not work. Fixed-price items work fine sometimes with non-clover scanners because you can enter their codes and serial numbers by keyboard, while the clover scanner will scan half the barcode to get the item code and then the other half of the barcode to get the weight or price.

Clover sells two scanners, one that is on a wire and you scan things with it; the other one is stationary so you can scan against it.

Merchant: So you’re telling me the built-in camera, which is a Clover-developed app, works just fine.

CSI Works support: So your external scanner is not from Clover?

Merchant: It is, it’s a Honeywell 2D image scanner, a little bit more sophisticated.

CSI Works support: I know it’s misleading because it works on fixed-price (and therefore fixed-barcode) items, but that’s only because fixed-price items are sufficient for keyboard entry, where as us, we’re putting a bit of a logic into it: only read this part of the barcode and then only read the next part of the barcode. That function is really breaking everything up, because we’re not really dealing with a scanner, we’re dealing with a keyboard.

CSI Works support: The Barcode Parser App is reading an extra leading digit in the barcode, so you need to change it's settings:
